Bikes are needed desperately at EHHS, and the school's physical education department is making a plea to town residents to donate their unused rides for a good cause.
“One of my students asked me if there is anything she can do after school, to lose weight, and be involved in a club, and I told her how I rode bicycles,” explains Cathy Cardini, physical education teacher at the school. “So, I'm starting a bicycle club here at EHHS for kids that don't want to play sports at the at high school, or don't have time to, but still want to be active after school,”
The plan, she says, is to go biking once or twice a week, after hours, and then hopefully to expand the program and include biking in the [regular] physical education activities the school offers.
Still, with the economy being what it is, there is no possibility for funds to buy bikes in the foreseeable future, so Cardini and the school are doing the next best thing: they are asking East Hartford residents to donate their unwanted bicycles, so they can be put to a really good use.
“If we would get 15 to 20 bikes, that would be great,” Cardini stated.
The bikes need not be in perfect condition either, she stresses. EHHS history teacher Joseph Bernabucci has worked in a bicycle shop in the past, and has pledged his support to the project. He will fix, he promises, any bike that is brought in and is in reasonable shape.
Residents who want to donate their old bikes can bring them at the high school on Saturday, May 16, between 9:00 am and 10:00 am.
Their generosity will be highly appreciated, Cardini says.
