Exchange honoring firefighters

E-mail Print PDF

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Marco Polo Restaurant from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the East Hartford Exchange Club will hold their annual program meeting, "Salute to East Hartford and Manchester's Bravest" in recognition of three outstanding firefighters for 2009 from the two towns.

This year's recipients are: Firefighter Joshua D. Recker - East Hartford Fire Department; Firefighter Paramedic Bryan Goulet - Manchester Fire Department, Fire - Rescue - EMS; Captain Todd Sise - Manchester Fire Dept. 8th Utilities District.

As recipients of this award, firefighters are selected who represent high ideals and accomplishments in Fire Prevention. The key selection criteria for a candidate in any particular year are not necessarily heroism or spectacular firefighting. In many communities the selection process is utilized as a tool to lead the departments by focusing on quality firefighter role models.

The East Hartford Exchange Club sponsors this annual ceremony in September as a local celebration for this year's recipients. On October 22, the Connecticut District Exchange Clubs hold their formal award ceremony at the Aqua Turf, when all three of East Hartford's local awardees will be included with other awardees from around the state.

Any member of the public who is interested in attending the Sept. 22 dinner and awards ceremony at the Marco Polo, please contact Nancy Fitzgerald at tel. 568-2607 by Monday, Sept. 21 as space is still available.
The East Hartford Exchange Club, member of the National Exchange Club, always welcomes potential new members to the organization. The civic group has a long-standing history of actively working to make our communities better places to live through programs of service in Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities, and Prevention of Child Abuse.

This photo of the Goodwin School 8th grade class was taken at the soon-to-open new East Hartford High School on Burnside Avenue in 1954. (Today it serves as East Hartford Middle School.) Sylvia Steadman, a member of the class, and four friends from Mrs. Paul's 1947 Second Grade got together recently at Alforno's restaurant to reminisce. "We are all not only East Hartford graduates - we are all Goodwin graduates of 8th grade-but we spent our 8th grade in what was to be the new EHHS on Burnside Avenue - Goodwin was growing to fast in those days - there were two 8th grades." Note the 8th grade boys with suits and ties - not bad for 13-year olds. "One of the 2nd graders brought along a report card from Mrs. Paul - she wrote in her comments to Bill's parents: ‘Billy seems to get much more fun out of school than is necessary.' Now how is that for tact!"

A thought for the day

"If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z, X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut."
