Senior Stars Singing Contest - Mon., June 21st, 1:30-2:30 PM, SESC. It was so much fun in 2009 that Health Net is sponsoring a Senior Stars competition this year! Entertainer Bob Mel will be back to warm up the crowd, run the karaoke machine, and queue the songs for contestants. Senior Centers throughout the state are holding local contests to determine which talented singers will move on to the next round...or all the way to the championship. Solos, duets, trios and groups are encouraged to compete. Start practicing your favorite song! Contestants need to sign-up at the Senior Center office at the SESC.

Brain Food - Tue., June 22nd, 11:30 AM -12:30 PM, SESC. Does your diet include foods that can improve your brain function? What foods can easily be added to recipes or eaten as a snack to maintain mental functioning and performance? Please join Tanya Zborowski from Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center for a special talk and demonstration about feeding your brain. Please register by Friday, June 18th.

Coffee Talk: Coping with Chronic Illness - Fri., June 25th, 10-11 AM, SESC. Please bring your questions and join Linda Corbeil from the Visiting Nurse and Health Services of CT for a special talk about living with and managing various chronic illnesses and conditions. Linda is a registered nurse and often speaks with older adults on topics of wellness. Refreshments will be provided.

Electric Utility Deregulation - Mon., June 28th, 2-3 PM, SESC. Deregulation was part of an effort by the CT State Legislature ten years ago to lower prices by allowing other companies to produce the electricity that CT Light & Power and United Illuminating deliver to their customers. Do you have questions about how to (or whether you should) select or change the company that supplies your electricity? Will a change lower your electric bill? Hear Sally McCartin from the CT Department of Public Utility Control for a special program explaining your options under electric utility deregulation and what the future holds regarding electricity rates in CT. (Will there be 'light' refreshments? - editor) Please register by Thursday, June 24.

Cookbooks are on sale at the SESC. Friends of the East Hartford Senior Centers have published a collection of recipes from the great cooks and chefs in and around East Hartford. To purchase a cookbook, sold for $10 each, please see someone in the Senior Services office at the SESC or call Michelle at 860-569-5659.

The New to You Thrift Shop is open Monday-Friday, 10 AM - 2 PM and Saturday, 9 AM - Noon at the South End Senior Center. Holiday items are on sale now! There is something for everyone and the prices are very reasonable. This thrift shop is an ongoing fundraiser of the Friends of the East Hartford Senior Centers, Inc. All proceeds benefit East Hartford senior citizens through the senior centers.

The East Hartford Public Library offers a service to homebound residents of the town called Books On Wheels. This service is for those residents who cannot come into the library on their own.
