Nurse honored for helping quake victims

The Connecticut Hospital Association recognized Sarah Bradbury, RN and Ana Maria Reyes-Scott, MSW as Healthcare Heroes at its annual meeting at the Aqua Turf in Southington on June 30.

When a devastating earthquake struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti in January, people across the globe watched the events unfold and offered support from the safety of their living rooms. Not East Hartford native Sarah Bradbury, RN.

She packed up her things and joined a team that would offer support to more than 300 survivors who desperately needed medical treatment. Bradbury was based 30 miles outside Port-au-Prince in a town called Caberet.

"The survivors were tired and scared," said Bradbury. "The great thing about being a nurse here is that I knew I could still be a nurse in a third world country... People did not speak the same language. I was limited to smiling and saying it would be okay."

Because of Bradbury, it would be okay for so many earthquake survivors.

She left Haiti knowing she made a difference, wishing she could have helped even more people.
"Not only is Sarah a caring individual but self-motivated as well," her nomination reads. "She is never content with what she knows but will seek out situations in which she can learn and become a better nurse."

Hartford native Ana Maria Reyes-Scott has found her life's perfect work in clinical social work. She has embraced a profession that matches her passion and stands apart as someone who has truly dedicated herself to helping others. Her caring and generous life outside HartfordHospital is testimony to her commitment to her work inside the hospital.

Inside the hospital, Reyes-Scott helps patients and their families with issues ranging from substance abuse issues and domestic violence, to helping patients place their family members who are no longer able to live on their own.

Reyes-Scott is an expert on community agencies and made it a point to host a Community Resource Fair to make sure the Hartford community members know what HartfordHospital health services are available to them.

Reyes-Scott has opened her heart to others for years. She also opens her home as a foster parent for the Department of Children and Families. In that capacity, Reyes-Scott has welcomed countless children into her home, helping infants, children and teenagers through sometimes trying times.
Reyes-Scott demonstrates her dedication to helping others every day of her life, both on and off duty.
