Heat Alert issued

Residents are urged to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day to the extent possible, and to stay hydrated.

Health Tips for Warm Weather from the Centers for Disease Control:

  • Stay cool and stay hydrated.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, regardless of your activity level.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, including pets.
  • Visit older adults or others at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Due to the pandemic and the unfinished state of the new $10 million East Hartford Senior Center, residents cannot take shelter during this heat wave in the lobby of the Public Safety Complex at 31 School Street or at the senior center, as has been the case in the past. On the front door of the police station lobby, signs are posted declaring that mask wearing is mandatory inside. Town Hall was partially reopened to the public Monday, June 21, 2021. And only town staff in the town’s senior services division of Parks and Recreation have been inside the new Senior Center. The finishing touches have still not been finalized on the former Sacred Heart Roman Catholic church property, but the town’s Senior newsletter says the building is open to tours by appointment.

By contrast the city of Hartford has three cooling centers open for its residents, Monday – Wednesday this week, and those are listed below.

The Hartford Fire Department is also handing out water to residents throughout the city.

“We have three cooling centers open and our fire department will be handing out water, but most importantly we want residents to remember to drink a lot of water before they go out and before they get thirsty,” said Mayor Luke Bronin. “We also recommend staying out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day, and please remember to check in on loved ones and neighbors, especially seniors, who may be particularly affected by the heat.”

Hartford Cooling Centers open Monday, June 28 – Wednesday, June 30, 2021:
Hartford Public Library, 500 Main Street, 9 AM — 6 PM
North End Senior Center, 80 Coventry Street, 9 AM – 4PM
South End Senior and Wellness Center, 830 Maple Avenue, 9 AM – 3:30PM

According to Mayor Marcia Leclerc’s office, high humidity and temperature of up to 98-104 degrees are anticipated, the mayor’s office declared, Monday, June 28 and Tuesday, June 29.

“As always, residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water throughout these hot days, wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing and limit time outdoors. Please remember to regularly check on infants and children as well as elderly or physically ill, because they are at a greater risk for heat-related illnesses.”

The mayor advised people to take a dip in one of the town’s five outdoor pools. Town pools open at 1 and close at 5 p.m. For location and more info go to https://www.easthartfordct.gov/parks-recreation/news/east-hartford-outdoor-pools-to-open-friday-june-18th
