Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Korngiebel

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Begley) Korngiebel, 95, of East Hartford, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 11, 2021.

Born in Boston, MA on June 6, 1925, a daughter of the late John F. and Agnes (Caulfield) Begley, she had been a resident of East Hartford for the past 70 years. Prior to her retirement, Betty was employed as an Auditor for 43 years by Sears & Roebuck Department Store. She later worked 22 years for the town of East Hartford as a school crossing guard. She was proud of her Irish heritage and a devout catholic and faithful communicant of St. Isaac Jogues Church, East Hartford.

Betty enjoyed politics as a longtime member of the East Hartford Democratic Party and was a hard working member for both the Democratic Town Committee and the 3rd District Democratic Committee. She was also a member of the Democratic Women’s Club of East Hartford. She was a co-founder of the Mayberry Village Revitalization Committee in East Hartford and was involved for many years in the village. Betty also liked knitting, sewing, dancing, reading the daily newspaper and solving crossword puzzles. Most of all, Betty was a proud mother and grandmother who cherished her time spent with her children, grandchildren, and dear friends.

Betty is survived three daughters, Cynthia M. Klatka and her husband Robert of Vernon, Marilyn E. Arnold and Elizabeth “Liz” Korngiebel both of East Hartford with whom she made her home; a son, David H. Korngiebel and his wife Amy of Charleston, SC; four special grandchildren; seven adored great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by two brothers, John F. Begley and his wife Lucille of Salem, MA, and Eugene V. Begley and his wife Patricia of Lynn, MA.

Funeral service will be Thursday (February18th) with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, corner of Main Street and Maplewood Avenue, East Hartford. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, (Section P), Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church on Thursday morning and wear a face covering while adhering to all of the regulations during the present health pandemic. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Betty’s name may be made to the American Lung Association of Connecticut, 45 Ash Street, East Hartford, CT 06108.
